BR is glad of the distinction for Freedom and Organization and has no corrections for it.

50580

About a possible new volume of essays by BR. They hope the papers [Archives] they left in America are on their way home; others are stored with the furniture of their Cambridge house, now given up.

50581

Patricia forwards an "enormous" letter from a young Australian [Paul Edwards] with a synopsis for a book he is writing on academic freedom.

50582

The Russells could not help Edwards much because "all our books, papers and records are in storage". Patricia has asked G.H. Hardy for a spare copy of his pamphlet to send Edwards.

50583

BR wants the title-page (of Inquiry into Meaning and Truth) to remain exactly as before.

50584

BR does not think it worthwhile to make corrections in Roads to Freedom as the alterations to make the book conform to his present opinions would be too extensive. He will read it in the next few weeks for a prefatory note.

Patricia thinks it highly desirable to reprint The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism.

50585

BR thanks Unwin for Schrödinger's gratifying letter, returned herewith (not present).

On a reprint of The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism: it is not to be updated "as its value consists in showing that the faults of Soviet Russia were innate from the beginning and therefore to be expected wherever Communism arises."

50586

"... we have been busy for some weeks sorting and reading old papers in preparation for an autobiography—an occupation which will take up most of our evenings for years, I should say." (Re Archives.)

BR declines to introduce the Schopenhauer volume. (See record 49753.)

Upon returning to London BR will decide upon omissions in The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism and write a preface.

50587

Re anti-Semitism and review of History in The Gates of Zion. BR will not "order" Unwin to send the editor a copy of the book. See record 50588 for the editor's letter requesting that BR "order" his publisher to send a copy.

The Russells are about to leave for Wales.

50588

Gross plans to publish BR's letter with a reply by the reviewer of History of Western Philosophy. He requests that BR "order" his publisher to send a copy of the book. Use of that word is the reason Patricia sent the letter to Unwin. See record 50587.

50589

BR's preface to Roads to Freedom is enclosed (not present). There are no alterations for the text.

50590

BR has approved the BBC negotiating publication of Authority and the Individual with Unwin.

50591

BR returned "last Sunday", in the best of health and spirits.

Patricia has heard from Jane Degras that Unwin is willing to publish Freda Utley's book.

She has altered the Russell's letterhead address from 27 to 18 Dorset House.

50592

Patricia does not understand why Unwin sent the Utley contract to her.

BR left for Berlin "this morning" and hopes to see Utley. He is willing to write a short preface.

50593

Patricia will join BR abroad in a few days. She does not know whether BR mentioned that her share of royalties is to be sent to her own account with Childs and not to their joint account "as heretofore".

50594

Attached is a handwritten note. It details Patricia's shares of the royalties of Power (1/3), History of Western Philosophy (1/3) and Authority and the Individual (1/2). Patricia seeks royalty information for Authority and the Individual in which she has a half share. She has not seen the book. She and BR have been separated for some months. She asks whether any Swedish royalties have been paid to Constance Malleson from Patricia's share. She also wants to know in advance of any proposed reprints to help her in her financial planning.

50595

Patricia does not wish to be more embarrassing than she must be for practical reasons.

50596

"As you know," BR is "very absent-minded", which would account for BR not mentioning his change of mind on Swedish royalties.

50597

Patricia requests a duplicate statement of royalties on History paid to her up to December 1947 [i.e., 1949].

50598

Patricia states that she requested the royalty statement for December 1949, not 1947.

50599

Patricia sends thanks for the royalty statements for 1947 and the year 1949-50. The income tax inspector wants to see statements for royalties (amounting to £2,577) paid to her during the tax year 1949-50, to be sent directly to the inspector.

Patricia's card states her preference to be known hereafter as "Mrs. Patricia Spence".
