Three lines of shorthand, evidently a letter to (perhaps to L.E.P. Tylor), are on the verso of the 2nd sheet of John P. Merrill's letter of 1946/02/07  to BR.
 

This is the title page, "Early Letters", of his and Colette's set of literary letters.

He has written instructions underneath the title about their fictional initials and addresses used in the actual letters.

This letter, no. 1, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. The original is not present, but there is a version in the Malleson-Urch ts., same date, document .104579c, record 112934, letter no. 3.

This document is signed "M", the initial chosen to represent Colette in the collection. It has been crossed out and replaced with "C". The fictional address "Edwardes Square" has been replaced by "Bernard Street". This contradicts the instructions of Russell in document .052351a, record 99799, where he writes that "Edwardes Square" should be changed to "Mecklenburgh Square".

This letter, no. 3, pp. 6-7, was prepared for a literary collection of their letters. It uses the fictional address of "Cheyne Walk" for "Gordon Square" and ends with the letter "L" rather than Russell's own name.

It begins with the second line of the original letter: "I feel you the embodied hope of the world...."

The original handwritten letter is document .200005, record 19042. There is also another typed version, document .201108, record 115360.

This letter, no. 5, page 10, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. The original is not present, but there is a version in the Malleson-Urch typescript; document .104579x, record 112955, letter no. 24.

Wording: only one phrase is the same. The date in the Urch typescript is also odd: two dates appear, the current one, which is part of a note before the text of the letter, and 7 October, which appears with the text but is clearly a mistake in the Urch ts.

This letter, no. 6, p. 11, was prepared for a literary collection of their letters. Russell has altered the fictional address to Gordon Square and the pseudonymous signature "L" to "B" by hand. The letter is a condensed version of the original letter, document .200050, record 19082, dated 29 Nov. 1916.

There are two fictional initials in the text: "P" for Jean Nicod and "R" for Clifford Allen.

This letter, no. 7, page 12, was typed for a literary collection of their letters.

The original is not present, but there is a version in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579ak, record 112969. It has the same date but the wording varies and it contains more text.

This letter, no. 8, pp. 13-14, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. The address has been changed by hand from "Edwardes Square" to "Bernard Square" which is also fictional.

The fictional initial "M" has been changed to "C".

The original is not present, but there is a version in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579an, record 112972. Its date is 4 December 1916. The wording varies, and the letter is shorter than the literary version.

This letter, no. 9, p. 15, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. It is signed with the fictional initial "M" and uses a fictional address. There are handwritten corrections made to it.

The original is not present, but there is a version in the Malleson-Urch ts, same date, document .104579bb, record 112986, letter no. 54. The wording varies greatly.

This letter, no. 12, p. 18, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. There are handwritten corrections to the text.

The fictional initial "M" has been changed to "C". The original is not present. The version in the Malleson-Urch typescript, document .104579de, record 113043, letter no. 108, has no text matches, but the date is recorded as being "postmarked 17 August 17" and is a date match.

Language similar in content but not a match appears in the Malleson-Urch typescript, 19 August 1917, document .104579dg, record 113045, letter no. 110 on p. 126.

This letter, no. 13, pp. 19-20, was prepared for a literary collection of their letters. This version contains additional text that does not appear in the original letter. It contains a fictional address which has been changed by hand by Russell as well as his pseudonymous initial "L" to "B".

The original letter is document .200171, record 19191.

This letter, no. 14, pp. 21-3, was typed for a literary collection of their letters.

The original is not present. The version in the Malleson-Urch ts. has variant text; the content is similar and some of the wording matches, e.g. "dull red stone". The date is the same.

Document .10457df, record 113044, letter no. 109.

This letter, no. 15, p. 24, was typed for a literary collection of their letters.

The original is not present. The version in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579kd, record 113049, letter no. 114, has no text matches, only the same date.

This letter, no. 16, p. 25, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. "Cheyne Walk" has been changed by hand. "Edwardes", which appears in the body, has been changed to "Mecklenburgh". The fictional initial "L." has been changed to "B".

The initial "K" which appears in the postscript refers to Howard V. Knox.

The content of the letter consists of the second paragraph of document .200182, record 19202, and part of the second paragraph of document .200183, record 19203, which makes up the postscript.

This letter, no. 17, page 26, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. It contains only part of the last paragraph of the original letter, document .200187, record 19207.

This letter, no. 17, p. 27, was typed for a literary collection of their letters.

Parts of the third paragraph of the original letter were used. The original letter is document .200190, record 19210. It is dated "Tuesday evening"; Colette has added the date of 11 Sept. 1917.

Note that the no. 17 is probably an error; there is also a literary letter with the same number but on p. 26. Also there is no letter no. 18 and no missing page.

This letter, no. 19, p. 28, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. It contains BR's correction of the fictional address to "Gordon Square" and the fictional initial "L" to "B".

The original letter is document .200197, record 19217; only part of the text was used in the literary version.

This letter, no. 21, p. 30, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. The letter has the fictional address in Colette's hand, crossed out with the genuine address in BR's hand.

The original is not present, but the version in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579ei, record 113073, letter no. 138, has similar wording. It, however, is dated later, 5 October 1917.

This letter, no. 22, p. 31, was typed for a literary collection of their letters. The fictional address in Colette's hand has been crossed out with the real address in BR's hand.

The original is not present, but the version in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579ej, record 113074, letter no. 139, is dated 10 October 1917. The wording varies from the literary version, but there is similarity.

This letter, no. 25, p. 34, was typed for a literary collection of their letters.

It contains only a few words from a sentence in a letter in the Malleson-Urch ts., document .104579ep, record 113080. Other words have been added.
