My Darling
I was glad of your letter,4 in spite of having been spoilt by two extra-good ones yesterday. — I consulted CEM5 as to what business we had and when it would be likely to finish. It seems not very probable that it will be over till seven on Sat. — but one can never tell.
I thought Mrs Marshall6 seemed very charming, the few times I saw her. — I don’t much wonder you can’t get on with Knox.7 Most philosophers like to use long words and splash about and seem grand; they are afraid that if they talked plain English they would be found out. — I am surprised that you read my other essays — I feel it a great honour — really I do.
What a joke about Mrs M’s sister.8 Suppose one had found a farm there and it had been the very one. — My Beloved, I must get to work — there is so much, so much, in my heart — but the time draws near, and mere words seem too weak — I cannot possibly tell you the millionth part of the joy you give me or of the longing I have for you —

Mrs M’s sister Colette had written on 28 August 1917 (BRACERS 113053): “Mrs. M.’s sister informed me this morning that her daughter is working on a market garden at Knighton”. Knighton is near Ashford Carbonel, Shropshire, where they had spent two weeks at a farm house earlier in the summer on an idyllic vacation.
