Veblen recommends BR to succeed Whitehead at Harvard.

Veblen asks Carnap to persuade the Harvard authorities to give BR Whitehead's position.

BR has deleted the "Mount Royal, Marble Arch, London, W.1" letterhead and substituted Trinity College, but notes that he is holidaying in London.

Kiskadden's "delectable parcels ... have given great satisfaction". "We have had rather a sad time. Peter was very seriously ill, and has been ordered not to live in Cambridge any more—she is now in N. Wales. I too have been ill off and on for some time, with repeated flu and bronchitis. She will not return to Cambridge and I, next autumn, shall start living in College in term time and joining her for vacations."

"I am very much upset by the fact that we (the British) are killing millions of Germans by starvation while we wallow in plenty. It is atrocious and fills me with shame. I don't like political trends in USA either, and Stalin is a devil. I feel I have lived too long. I look at Conrad and think it is very probable that he will be destroyed by an atomic bomb. The world is altogether too horrible."

BR would like to see G.F. Stout's six chapters of God and Nature before deciding on a preface.

BR declines to write a preface, as "a good deal of rather tedious explanation would be needed".

BR approves the publication of his 1949/08/21 letter and thanks Stout for his kindness re arrangements to visit Australia.

BR writes in response to Wiener's question on where he should publish his ms. on sensation intensities: "[Words missing, but perhaps: If the use of] logical symbols is essential to what you have to say, it is desirable to publish in some journal printed by the Camb. Univ. Press."

The difficulties lie in Bierich's reliance on ordinary language. "The point is that mathematical logic needs a new language...." The notes concern the symbolism of relations.

"I have been spending the past week in Berlin, but had no opportunity to get into South Germany." BR knows the difficulty of making a good translation.
