"I read with the greatest interest your very illuminating Roads to Freedom—What you say of French Syndicalist movement is quite true and well deserved, for it's far from being what it should be—just as our Socialist Party, half of which do not know whether they must stick to the Socialistic idea or incline toward 'bourgeoisie'."

"Monday night". Dated by BR.

BR is completely in OM's thoughts. She wrote to Mrs. Whitehead—asking to see them tomorrow or Wednesday.

OM loves BR deeply.

83233

Re the initial stages of his Survival Movement and funding difficulties. "Within the next fortnight an official English branch of the Survival Movement will be brought into existence."

83235

Ableman's "Survival Movement" has come to an end. BR had sent him a "favourable comment" on the pamphlet that Ableman had sent in connection with his movement.

Ableman had written I Hear Voices and encloses a typescript for his unpublished book (not present).

83236

"Wednesday". Dated by BR.

OM saw Mrs. Whitehead, who realizes the difficulties ahead for her and BR.

OM is "tied by 8 years of affection and responsibility and it would really hurt Philip and Julian...." Philip sees how absorbed OM is in BR. OM asked him to sleep in his room. "Philip and I are devoted friends not more."

Life is empty for her without BR and writes of her "deep love" for him.

83237
83238

Their first invitation to BR to contribute an article on nuclear warfare for their first issue was not accepted by him. Gangat hopes that he will contribute an article on the same subject for their second issue. The first volume of Africa Asia is enclosed.

83239

Allaun thanks BR for the preface and also for spotting the two mistakes which he had overlooked in his pamphlet Stop the H-Bomb Race.

83240

Allaun's pamphlet, Stop the H-Bomb Race, has sold 10,000 copies and is sold out. Allaun is completing another short pamphlet with a possible title as "New Moves in the H-Bomb Race" and asks if BR would be willing to write an introduction to this pamphlet as well.

"Incidentally my family has just been listening to the record of your speech in the Free Trade Hall last May and your spirited reply to the heckler. It's terrific."

83241
83242

Allaun sends a duplicated copy of the MS of his second pamphlet, New Moves in the H-Bomb Struggle. BR's reply is on the verso (see record 83243).

83243

BR is sorry for the delay in writing a preface to his pamphlet, but he has had a slight illness which has interfered with his work.

Enclosed is the draft MS for the pamphlet (5 pieces) with emendations in blue ink.

83244

"I received your very prompt and friendly reply to my original letter, asking if you would like to write a few words as preface to my new pamphlet on the hydrogen bomb." Allaun had sent a duplicated copy of the MS but had not heard from BR so he sends another copy (enclosed).

83245

83246

Allen wishes that BR would write more on Conrad.

83247

Brainin asks BR to reconsider their invitation. "Thank you for your quick response to my cable. Needless to say we are terribly disappointed. We had planned to make our annual Dinner this year a manifestation for the advancement of scientific progress in the cause of peace. You more than anybody else are the spokesman for this cause."

83248

Unwin encloses for BR a copy of a letter they have received from Gross W. Alexander addressed to BR, along with Unwin's reply (both present).

83257

"But, alas, it is quite impossible for me to yield to your plea as I am completely overwhelmed by work in the anti-H-bomb campaign. I am much gratified that the American Rationalist plans to put my picture on the cover in May, in which month I shall become eighty-six."

83258

The American Scholar requests an article by BR for their autumn issue.

83259

83266

"So we will have to wait until the amount collected is sufficient to publish the next magazine in which will be included your 'Messages' in both French and English."

83267

Re the delay in publishing BR's messages due to money. "I entirely understand and have every sympathy for your difficulty, for I am experiencing it myself in the course of attempting to further my work for peace."

83268

"Thanking you for your kind words just received: it was just decided to print the important material received from you, whatsoever are the difficulties."

83282

I must apologize, however, for the inconvenience I caused you whilst taking my photographs; but I am glad to say I obtained some extremely good ones during my last visit, and I thank you for your patience."
