Frank Russell believes that BR's prosecution is vindictive because the authorities knew that BR planned to give up his pacifist work. Cockerill counters that this was not known to the Director of Public Prosecutions. "Confidential".

75812

Cockerill does not think that BR should publish a statement on his abandonment of his pacifist work because it would be misleading.

"Private and Confidential".

75813

Cockerill will write again once he has consulted the various departments concerning BR.

75814

The order against BR has been terminated as of 11 July.

75815

BR would be glad to have the order against him withdrawn as soon as possible.

75816

BR wants to make clear to the War Office that his views on the war and the government have not changed and that he is not promising to say only things that the government will approve of.

"Private".

The article in question contained obvious misstatements that were corrected in a Tribunal article of Jan. 10, regarding Russia.

75818

75819

Frank Russell asks when the order against BR will be withdrawn.

75820

"... I hope that my brother may have an equally happy issue to all his other afflictions."

75821

Emery hopes to talk to BR about some matters in more detail. Only the first sheet is in the file, and the letter is incomplete.

75836

This is a transcription of document .048472. Also in the file: a carbon copy of this transcription. BR's annotation states: "The lectures concerned became Principles of Social Reconstruction."

75837

Cole attempts to correct a misunderstanding about his criticism of one of BR's lectures, perhaps the one on the State and given on Sept. 27, or perhaps the "Property" lecture in Principles of Social Reconstruction, to judge from Cole's reference to page 121n. At any rate, BR was offended. Cole had called him "not a 'political' intellect".

75838
This is a transcription of document .048474. Also in the file: a carbon copy of this transcription.
75839

BR does not understand how anyone like Emery can be on the capitalists' side.

BR lists some of the properties of the class war that he believes in and questions what little liberty is left except for the liberty given to members of the powerful nations.

"I have a seminar where I meet the better students, and it is great fun."

75840

Emery feels that the dispute is between two economic systems of society, one based on private property, capital and free enterprise in the production of goods, and the other based on the opposite.

Emery agrees with BR on the subject of class war and that he too believes that it is useless. He does, however, object to the way BR identifies the defence of the wage system under private property and private enterprise as a defence for the rich. Emery thinks that under a socialistic régime there will be a continuous sense of injustice.

75841

BR holds that Emery's grounds for objection on the matter of capitalism are valid. BR also holds that the American experience of capitalism is inadequate because it is a country that has immense national wealth.

The sheets have been folded three times—unusual for a file copy.

75842

This is a transcription of document .048229. BR has read Emery's pamphlet and thinks that his facts are accurate. He is, however, surprised by the main question about capitalism versus communism. He feels that capitalism is unjust and that communism is just. BR is amazed to find people who support the blockade in Russia in order to maintain a system that gives them wealth and power while giving misery to others.

75859

Fu thanks BR for his letter and informs him of the numerous invitations he has received. Dora's article will be retyped.

75860

Fu is surprised to hear that translations of BR's books are to be published without his knowledge. He says that he will make inquiries about it and let BR know of any new information about the Commercial Press's initiative.

75861

Fu informs BR that in trying to distribute BR's lectures to students he realized that this may not be done without the agreement of the publishers in England. He then states how the only other copies of BR's works are in the hands of Mr. Chang and Mr. Jiang. Fu assures BR that they are not capable of publishing the lectures without his knowledge.
