BR highly approves of what Lord has been doing.

125315

BR declines to undertake more work in addition to what he has already undertaken.

The Mr. Brock to whom the letter is addressed may be Hugh Brock of Peace News.

"Private". BR has nothing interesting to say about the general election [in the U.K.]. The Peace Movement will have to go on as before.

125338

BR does not know if his new book [Wisdom of the West] "is still free for Italy" (doubtless meaning free for translation).

125339

BR sends Foges Tibaldi-Chiesa's letter about translating [Wisdom of the West] into Italian.

125340

BR does not know which elementary book on symbolic logic to recommend.

125341

"£116.2.9 > Tylor".

125342

BR looks forward to the 2 copies of Bersellini's novel.

125343

Dora's caravan work is interesting. Switzerland and Sweden, as she says, pose a problem.

125345

He refers her to Human Society in Ethics and Politics for its chapter on sin (vs. socially undesirable conduct).

125346

125350

Cashyap made a useless journey to north Wales while BR was in London.

On whether families and homes are devastated by people turning to religion, BR instances Matthew XI: 34-36. It appears that Bertrand Russell is referring to Matthew X: 34ff.

125352

BR offers a critique of The Flowers of Hiroshima. A propaganda novel is a dangerous form, and is ineffective unless it is well done.

125353

"£22.5.6 > Hepburn & Ross".

125354

BR cannot reconsider his rejection of the writer's kind invitation. Both engagements and reasons of health motivate BR.

BR cannot speak in their New Year programme, though he would if he could but he has too many engagements.

125356

BR didn't write such a book as the one being inquired about. "In 1941, which is the date concerned, I was living in America and war conditions made communications with England difficult and precarious. When I left America in 1944 I was unable to bring with me all the documents that I might conceivably need and I therefore have to rely upon my memory, which is a complete blank in this matter." [Re Archives.]

BR won't pay to send UNESCO another consignment of his books.

125357

125358

125361

"Spanish publisher = Aguilar, S.A. de Ediciones, Madrid, Joya 210. > Foges".

125362

125363

BR saw Holland in London. He encloses "the new letter [not present] which I have signed."

125364

BR thinks it probably that Whitehouse is correct about some errors, but BR lacks the time to look into the matter.

125365

BR looks forward to reading Night of the Mist. Still under discussion is BR's Nightmares.

125366

BR has not had time to read Paul Ignotus's book and hardly ever writes reviews. Surprising, however, is the view that Hungary regards the BBC as a branch of M.I.5."

BR won't be able to see Rickards on his brief visit to the UK.

125369

BR is willing that "The Expanding Mental Universe:" (B&R B132) be published in French.

125371

BR did not agree that Pugwash should express an opinion on Khrushchev's disarmament proposal and does not wish to see the Pugwash movement split on it.

125372

For reasons of health BR cannot accept Grieg's flattering invitation.

125373

"Refusal".

125374

BR praises Novasha's Topics of the Day. He only feels doubt about Kashmir.

The letter was to be sent c/o the publisher.

125375

"Suggest third November eleven-thirty for photographer. Russell"

125376

BR prefers that Hutton alleviate the effect of the typhoon on Japan by sending all of the money he collects, rather than spending a considerable part of it on his travel there.

125377

BR send another photo of himself rather than Chappelow's.

125378

"It is encouraging to have such liberal and enlightened views from Ethiopia."

125379

BR encloses £5 as a donation to the Club.

125380

BR suggests the writer appeal to the Rationalist Press Association for an unknown purpose.

125381

BR tells Duff that he has refused the Moroccan Embassy invitation, though now that he knows its purpose he favours it.

125382

BR believes determinism applies to human beings as well as elsewhere. "... [T]he conception of moral responsibility is one which requires a good deal of re-interpretation if it is to have any validity." He refers the writer to the discussion of free will in the last chapter of Our Knowledge of the External World.

125383

"Topchiev > Rotblat".

125384

In Principia's second edition BR adopted "an entirely extensional view and therefore considered that two class-concepts which have the same extension are identical. But I am no longer satisfied with this view and am not clear as to what to put in its place."

125385

125388

BR tells this Maharajah that he cannot attend the World Religious Conference in India; engagements in England make it impossible.

125389

"Legal and Ethical Experience—Northrop". [F.C.S. Northrop published The Complexity of Legal and Ethical Experience: Studies in the Method of Normative Subjects in 1959. For Russell's copy, see record 125037. He marked two pages in it: 31 and 298, the latter with a "No".]

125390

Addressed to "Mr." Royon, but records 117327 and 117327 have Bette Royon sending BR the material he acknowledges here.

BR acknowledges receiving documents concerning Vienna and the recent Pugwash conference.

125391

BR returns the picture she enclosed, signed.

125392

BR expresses his opinion on Khrushchev's disarmament proposals and hopes it will be accepted in place of the article suggested.

125393

"Signed photo > Dirk Crafford".

125394

BR is not surprised Nature won't print "The Social Responsibilities of Scientists" and agrees with Science and suggests New Scientist.

125395

BR comments on Blackett's paper, "Thoughts on British Defence Policy". BR agrees with his criticisms of British defence policy but not necessarily Blackett's own policy. Still, reduction of armaments is important for reducing tension and great waste of money. In a big war, nuclear weapons are sure to be manufactured, even if prohibited. He likes the description of the abomination of nuclear war on p. 17. "I was also pleased with the point you make that we have to go on thinking Russians incredibly wicked in order to feel justified in our plans for exterminating them by the million."

"I feel myself very much of an amateur in technical discussions of armaments...."

They look forward to the Blacketts coming to their cottage at Christmas time.

There are 2 other authors.

125398

A blank index card was inserted between pp. 320-1 of Edith Finch's Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, 1840-1922 (Russell's Library, no. 1521). There is a dedication on the front end papers which reads "AR from E.F. 1938".

125399

Edith Finch's business card was inserted between the front endpapers of Finch's Carey Thomas of Bryn Mawr (Russell's Library, no. 1522). The card reads "with love to Bertie from Edith Finch".
