"As for nationalism and universalism, it is natural and not culpable to have more affection for one's own country or race than for another, but this should not interfere with one's sense of justice which should be impartial. Your question whether a Jew can live as freely outside Israel as in it is one which a Jew could answer better than a gentile. I should certainly have thought that a Jew can live quite freely in England, but I do not know enough about other countries to give an opinion. You ask if any true religion is compatible with real science. I do not understand this question. If any religion is true, it must be compatible with science. For my part, I do not think that there is such a thing as a 'true' religion."

"Dearest Alys Thank thee most warmly for thy very kind letter. I have listened sometimes to thy broadcasts about old friends...."

21820

"Dearest Alys Thank thee for thy letter."

BR suggests meeting — "At least once before we die."

BR will telephone for a meeting on Feb. 6.

21822

"Dearest Alys Thank thee for thy nice letter."

BR expects to be settled in Richmond in a month "probably".

"I am dreadfully busy."

21823

"Dearest Alys I have only just this minute discovered thy letter of Sep. 30 enclosed in Logan's book about thy mother." "What thee says about our marriage is very generous, and fills me with shame."

BR has most of the Paris letters, 1894 (but Alys had them); also the 2 "Mit Gott" notebooks bought in Berlin.

21824

"Dearest Alys I told John and Susan of thy kind suggestion of asking them to a party, and they said they would be delighted to come."

BR moves to Richmond on May 1.

21825

"Dearest Alys Thank thee for thy letter."

"When I was young I was an appalling prig. Now I am less virtuous but also less self-righteous."

21826

"Dearest Alys I have been meaning to propose myself some time before May 18, but Australia and the BBC keep me busy."

Australian Lecture Tour (1950)

"Dearest Alys Thanks for thy letter."

Written from Menzies Hotel, Melbourne. Itinerary in the continent. Monotonous countryside. BR has sent his previous letter by diplomatic bag. He returns on 27th "(if Stalin permits)".

US Lecture Tour (1950)

"Dearest Alys Until now I have not had a moment to write any but business letters but now I have a few minutes."

"I saw Miss Putnam, who is amazingly plucky, and impressed me. I also saw Evelyn Whitehead — very old, very shaky with neuritis, and so nearly blind that she can't read. She has a miserable life. On Tuesday I shall see Edith Finch."

"Everybody is kind, but the F.B.I. haunts people's minds — it is almost like Russia."

BR goes to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize on Dec. 10.

"After that I hope never to travel again."

Précis of letter made by Berendt and typed at the foot of the typescript carbon.

"I do not maintain positively that space-time is discrete, but only that it cannot be shown not to be."

"1) I do not feel any difficulty in the concept of infinite continuity. I only think that the opposite hypothesis is tenable and interesting. 2) I have written nothing on this subject since Human Knowledge, but as regards supporters, I think you might find it interesting to write to H.W. Poole [address] who professes to have a proof that space-time must be discontinuous. He sent me his proof, but I was unable to estimate its validity. 3) I have never discussed Whitehead's system of extensive abstraction. He and I, after many years of friendly collaboration, came to a profound disagreement and neither of us cared to discuss our disagreements in public. I must confess that I have forgotten the gist of his system of extensive abstraction."
