BRACERS Notes

Record no. Notes, topics or text
133608

This is a printed slip soliciting donations to the BR Peace Fund, Christopher Farley being treasurer. "The note is inserted quite unknown to Lord Russell by his secretary."

133609

The text: "Am sending you agreement express this afternoon but for reasons stated in my covering letter Foundation excluded and agreement is between you and Felton."

133610

The text: "Very anxious to ensure transportation of archives this Saturday. Is this possible please confirm".

133611

The BRPF is unincorporated. The archives should not be given to it while unincorporated. Delay the transportation of the archives?

Rights in the autobiography.

Her first trip to North Wales found it beautiful but she wishes BR were nearer for discussions.

133612

Re Stanley Unwin and American rights in the autobiography.

She received BR's letter of 11 September (not found) and scrapped her own.

Inland Revenue has a test case ongoing; Mr. Madams advised on BR's situation.

133613

Re BR's archives, grandchildren, annuity, John Russell (Lord Amberley), BR's autobiography, and wills.

133614

"EXPRESS". This letter confirmed that a telegram had been sent on the same day re BR's Observer payment for parts of the autobiography. The telegram is at record 133615.

133615

This telegram was confirmed by a letter sent the same day. See record 133614 for contents.

133616

They will hand all papers relating to BRPF to Heald, Johnson, Garton & Co. Does Goddard have BR's permission "to divulge all your private affairs" to them?

133617

BR confirms "that Messrs. Heald, Johnson & Garton are being instructed on behalf of the two Foundations." BR realizes that there is "considerable overlap between my own affairs and those of the Foundation."

133618

Goddard has made available to Heald, Johnson, Garton papers relating to the 2 foundations and BR's private affairs as requested by them.

133619

Re his autobiography (vols. 1 and 2), his archives, grandchildren, annuity, and wills. The codicil re Schoenman's access to BR's papers no longer applies, following assignment of the archives.

133620

Re the American rights for BR's autobiography, vol. 1, his archives, grandchildren, annuity (which she highly recommends) and wills. Christopher Farley printed in pencil on this letter: "Felton notified."

133621

Re wills. BR has replaced Madams with Felton as his accountant.

133622

Re BR's autobiography and archives. Felton has objected to her having discussed Auto. Vol. 2 with Unwin.

She believes BR should not have to warranty certains things in the gift of his archives to the BRPF.

133623

She informs Felton that she has met with Unwin at BR's request.

133624

Re Felton, assignments to the BRPF, and the Russells' wills.

133625

The Observer's apology letter is enclosed (record 133626).

133626

Gibbings notes the apology to BR to be printed in the next issue, 21 August, re whether BR read the Report of the Warren Commission. This letter was enclosed in record 133625.

133627

The draft wills will come in the next few days.

133628

"We are very upset by the delay in receiving the draft Wills. ... As you know, we had a long history of delays by Messrs. Coward, Chance, and these were largely responsible for our decision to transfer our affairs from their hands to yours."

133629

The Observer has not published the apology as promised, apparently.

133630

Re The Daily Mail and the allegation that BR didn't read the Warren Report.

133631

The apology was indeed published in The Observer; she notes Schoenman has changed his mind about The Daily Mail's allegation.

133632

Enclosed is Edith's draft will (not present).

133633

Enclosed is BR's draft will (not present). Lucas raises many topics germane to the will.

133634

Lucas hopes to see BR during his trip to London. She raises insurance matters.

133635

Enclosed were assignment forms (not present) for the archives and the autobiography, Vol. 2.

133636

"As to a possible meeting in London, I have a great number of engagements, and do not yet know when I shall have to return to Wales."

133637

This letter, signed "Russell" and presumed not sent, and the following two, documents 313428 and 313429 (records 133638 and 133639) were removed from a binder in which all F-3 letters were found. Their placement here reflects their placement in the binder.

"I notify you that I have transferred my entire interest in the papers covered by that Agreement [of 10 September 1966] to the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation."

There is also a typed carbon of this letter, document 313427A.

133638

The text of this letter is longer than record 133637. There are three carbons of this letter; two of the carbons have an acknowledgement of receipt typed on the bottom. There are two additional carbons with the double spacing of the original replaced by single spacing; the text remains the same. Document numbers 313428A to 313428E have been assigned to these carbons.

133639

The letter is signed "Russell" but presumably not delivered.

"I have today transferred my archives, which are at present in the possession of Continuum Limited ... to you subject to an Agreement." This letter has a carbon, document 313429A. There is also a typed letter, double spaced, dated 1966 on which Christopher Farley wrote in pencil "Retype"', document 313429B. There are also two other carbons made with a different typewriter—the text remains the same. They have been numbered 313429C to 313429D.

133640

BR has signed everything Lucas has sent him to sign and sent them to Jack Black.

133641

Lucas does not need to be present for the execution of the wills.

133642

Lucas notes that BR has signed the documents and forwarded them to Jack Black. One concerns the autobiography.

133643

Re several points in BR's will arising from a phone conversation with Anton Felton yesterday. Evidently BR wished to put in a letter to his trustees why the will does not provide for certain members of his family.

133644

BR and Edith have signed their wills.

133645

Re provision in BR's will for his son, John Conrad Russell.

133646

The enclosed draft codicil, 18 November 1966, document 313436A, provides John Russell with an annuity of £300.

133647

Lucas thanks BR for a cheque for the burglary policy.

133648

The letter was sent to BR with a compliments slip. The letter records the fact that Lucas sent BR a draft codicil (for John Conrad Russell).

133649

Re the removal of Harriet (Barry) Ward from Burke's Peerage. BR is concerned, too, that Debrett's continues to have her deleted. Dora acknowledged that Harriet wasn't BR's child, and Harriet's wish is that her true father be acknowledged.

133650

Farley provides further clarification on Harriet Ward.

133651

BR will sign the codicil once it is in final form.

133652

Re Harriet Ward, Burke's Peerage and Debretts. Does BR have Harriet's wish in writing?

133653

Re Harriet Ward.

133654

Croft Baker encloses the final Codicil (not present) for signature.

133655

Re BR's will and signed codicil. Felton is to have copies of both.

133656

Photocopies enclosed (not present).

133657

Lucas forwards 3 bills of costs from Coward Chance (not present).

133658

Re the paternity of Harriet Ward. Mr. Lock of Coward Chance never had any information on the impossibility of BR's being the father, e.g. on which ship he had travelled to America on.

133659

A Christmas and New Year's card.

133660

Stetler will get copies of the pamphlet into bookstores, but meanwhile will hold off on remitting sales income. He shares Farley's regret for the printers' incompetence.

133661

Another batch of pamphlets is being sent. Farley is back from Hanoi after 4 weeks.

"If you have been libelled, sue the bastards."

The letter is mistakenly dated 1964.

133662

Stetler describes dissemination of the pamphlet and recent publications.

133663

There is a second carbon, document 400263a.

On publishing matters.

133664

Stetler's activities will come to an end with the end of the school year. "If I could be paid enough to live on, I could see about paying the passage fare myself [to UK]."

133665

Stetler asks for glossy prints of photos in "Death and Pillage in the Congo".

(His Lysistrata campaign is amusing.)

133666

"Bertrand Russell and Chris send their very best."

133667

Schoenman will pass the photo request to Africa and the World.

133668

Stetler encloses (not present) the first number of Free Student. He will send a list of donors; his own name is to be kept secret.

133669

Schoenman mentions his travel plans and likes Free Student.

A second carbon is present, document 400268a.

133670

Stetler has received 300 copies of War and Atrocity in Vietnam. Air strikes against North Vietnam have started.

133671

BR has made 2 statements (on the bombing).

133672

On Free Student; the bombing of Vietnam and new activities.

133673

On the death of Malcolm X, whom Schoenman saw shortly before X's return to the US.

133674

Stetler's film from the NLF was confiscated, and he is going to court to retrieve it. The result may be an indictment for smuggling or being an agent of a foreign power.

The enclosures, documents 400273 and 400274 in an envelope, are clippings from the Cincinnati Enquirer about the seizure of the film and a May Second Movement statement on it, promising a showing of the film at CCNY on Feb. 26.

133675

Stetler's film from the NLF was confiscated, but the FBI have returned it.

He spoke at Briarcliffe College ("another of those colleges of beautiful women") on Vietnam.

133676

More copies of War and Atrocity in Vietnam are being sent. The Progressive Book Shop in Los Angeles is expecting copies from Stetler.

133677

Schoenman is due back in London on 12 March and is due to leave on 16 March to visit President Nyerere.

133678

Stetler describes the reception of War and Atrocity in Vietnam

133679

Stetler believes he cannot manage the airfare to the UK this summer, but offers his services in the US, including research.

133680

More copies of War and Atrocity in Vietnam have been sent to Stetler.

133681

Schoenman encourages Stetler to come to UK.

133682

Schoenman encourages Stetler to remit funds from the sale of the pamphlet.

133683

Stetler hasn't been able to write in more than a month. He can't borrow the money needed to get to UK this summer. He will be student coordinator for ECLC. He apologizes for not having remitted funds from selling War and Atrocity in Vietnam. He is not optimistic on finding distribution-for-fee of BRPF material.

133684

The letter is unsigned but appears to be from Farley since it refers to Schoenman. No cheque has been received for literature sent to Stetler.

133685

Stetler describes his summer of work, study and activism on Vietnam. A cheque will be sent shortly.

133686

Schoenman is back from the Helsinki conference, which he describes.

133687

Stetler mentions the Helsinki conference, "us hard-care communists", and Free Student. He may return to Haverford.

133688
133689

Schoenman mentions Philip Luce's article in the Saturday Evening Post and asks Stetler's view of it and the present position of the May 2nd Movement, the Progressive Labor Party and the effect of Luce's article.

133690

SDS and the duBois Club are mentioned.

133691

Unsigned but likely Farley. He hasn't heard from Stetler or the May 2nd Movement and asks for a cheque for the literature sent to him.

133692

Schoenman mentions that a decision on visas for the NLF is expected soon.

Document 400294 is a duplicate carbon.

133693

Farley says the matter of a cheque for the pamphlets is "now very urgent".

Document 400296 is a 2nd carbon.

133694

Farley would like a cheque for the pamphlets and refers to his letters of 9 July, 9 August and 13 September.

133695

Schoenman has in mind a War Crimes Tribunal, a national conference and various actions under their Campaign against Imperialism. He sends (not present) BR's statement for Cuba, one to TASS, and his own speech in Djakarta; also a list of their new directors.

133696

Another talk by telephone would be good, since letters aren't secure. Stetler describes communists and others. He expects to be married in 2 weeks and is moving back to Philadelphia.

133697

On 20 December the BRPF is holding a meeting in solidarity with the NLF's 5th anniversary. On 26 and 27 March a National Conference from which a Solidarity Committee will be formed with its onw bulletin. This will "take the militants away from the revisionists and peace formula people." Plans for the War Crimes Tribunal are growing. Schoenman is critical of the immense scope of Stetler's plan for research on Latin America and Asia.

133698

The May 2nd Movement voted to disband, despite Stetler's wish. Most political groups are not anti-imperialist. He is completing his B.A. He and Susan could come to UK in early June. The draft looks to be a problem for him and asks if enrollment at LSE is possible.

133699

Wood welcomes Stetler if he is able to come to the UK and work for the BRPF.

133700

With the letter is an early photocopy with a 4-p. attachment titled "American Liberation League". Both have been photocopied again as document 400280 but moved to follow 400303, the original of the letter.

"It is all too easy for wel intentioned people to fall for the peace proposals of Bobby Kennedy...." Stetler would return to the US in the fall. He suggests establishing the BRPF in the US.

133701

Schoenman is critical of the disbandment of the May 2nd Movement and is theoretical on the matter of anti-imperialist strategy and working with liberal groups.

133702

Stetler details plans for Studies in the Third World, Inc. They printed 10,000 copies of the first number of Liberation USA and asks for an article from Schoenman for the 2nd number. Travel plans will be settled in a week.

133703

Schoenman refused to hand over his passport, and FBI agents retreated. Plans for action are detailed. Cooperation with the American Liberation League needs to be discussed. The first issue of the Solidarity Bulletin is publiished, soon to be moved to letterpress.

133704

The Stetlers will arrive 2 June. They have spent time with John Gerassi. Stetler refers to "the despicable and untrustworthy characters of Morse and King".

133705

Schoenman describes his interviews on French TV and sends the directors' addresses Studies in the Third World, including that of David Horowitz.

133706

Stetler requests cabling addresses of Farley, Horowitz, Lane and Schoenman.

133707

Morse and King "operate within all the premises of imperialism". Schoenman is happy with a Trotskyist tendency. He asks about World Outlook, Ernest Mandel and Deutscher. He suggests defoliating the cherry trees in Washington.
