O'Neill updates BR regarding John Russell.

"I called on him at his mother's flat recently, and found him to be, on the whole, rather improved. He is still restless and agitated, and has ideas of contacting Susan, but I was able to engage him in conversation on literature and politics, and found him to be well oriented in these spheres."

"I should judge that he is still very preoccupied with his own fantasies. He is at his best when his mother is giving him her undivided attention. He shows no initiative at all, and his only activity is reading. I thought his condition was static. He was not noticeably worse, nor was he much better."

Bill for professional services, receipted.

118475

Edith noted at the top: "In reply to R's letter of 14 January".

O'Neill updates BR on John's situation and provides two suggestions: "1) That since John has the highest regard for you and would greatly value hearing from you now and again that you should write to him occasionally. I am sure he would welcome this and it would give him the sense of being in contact with you. 2) That his children should be allowed to visit him from time to time. He has so few emotional links in his life that I believe those that were made should be fostered, and I know he has strong feeling for his children. I can well understand that there may be complications attending this course but I would like you to consider it."

118476

BR thanks O'Neill for his letter of 4 March.

In response to his suggestions BR writes, "I had already arranged for John's children to spend ten days in Cornwall during the Easter holidays; I will adopt your suggestion of writing a letter to John." BR encloses a cheque for three guineas (not present).

118478

O'Neill writes to BR about his recent visit with John, writing:

"... I felt rather disquieted by what I saw. John seems to remain now most of the time in his room, in bed or sitting about."

Regarding the recommended course of action, "He would certainly go downhill if he were admitted to the hospital, as his contact with his mother and home is by now his only hold on life. Intensive psychotherapy is impractical, and I do not think it would benefit him. The only suggestion I can make is that he should be seen from time to time, so that one channel of communication, so to speak, can be kept open. We have to be ready for the possibility of Mrs. Grace falling ill." "... he treasures letters from yourself."
