O'Neill writes to BR about his recent visit with John, writing:
"... I felt rather disquieted by what I saw. John seems to remain now most of the time in his room, in bed or sitting about."
Regarding the recommended course of action, "He would certainly go downhill if he were admitted to the hospital, as his contact with his mother and home is by now his only hold on life. Intensive psychotherapy is impractical, and I do not think it would benefit him. The only suggestion I can make is that he should be seen from time to time, so that one channel of communication, so to speak, can be kept open. We have to be ready for the possibility of Mrs. Grace falling ill." "... he treasures letters from yourself."
