Saturday night.

My Darling

Here I am, after bicycling all the way. It was very hot, but I enjoyed it. I find the Whiteheads fairly well — Whitehead rather tired with a frightful bout of exam papers — Mrs W. better than she was. You might have safely written in your own hand, as the old servant is away on her holiday. The heat is greater than ever. I am on my bed, without even pyjamas, yet I am much too hot. Mrs W. says the best oculist she knows of in England is a man named Fleming; and that Dr. Bull in Paris is very good, probably the best living. I knew Dr. Bull years ago. He was a friend of Costelloe. I have heard him spoken of as very good. I will send you the other man’s address. You ought to waste no time. I should think Bull was the man. He is a Canadian, I think, but he may be American.

Goodnight my Dearest Love. I will finish in the morning.

Sunday morning. Darling your 2 letters have just been brought me and are a great joy. Obviously you ought to go to Marienbad as soon as possible if it is going to do your eyes any good. It is very sad that our time should be cut short, but that is a small matter compared to your eyes. Not even omnipotence can take away the days we have had — they are a possession for ever. Yes, the days at Putney were very delightful — there was a joy when we were getting to know each other and each fresh thing turned out to be better than one could have dreamed.

I am writing in bed and it is time for breakfast so I must get up. I will write again later if I possibly can. You can write here freely. I long to be back with you — more than I can say. It is a vast hunger. Goodbye my Beloved.

Your
B
