My Dearest Dearest
I have only time for a line — all day I have been with the family and felt I couldn’t write till I was alone. Now I am taking their letters to Marlborough to post, as I have the only bicycle — so I am writing by the roadside.
I think I shall have to write for you the book I had planned for McGegan (P.S.F. Sec.) called “Jokes without tears”. The supposed letter from Williams and Norgate was written by Gilbert Murray.
The oculist is Percy Fleming F.R.C.S. He used to live 31 Wimpole Str., which still finds him, but he now lives somewhere in Harley Str.
The heat has been incapacitating but it is pleasant now. Who do you suppose we all had tea with? The Reades of Ipsden! They are staying in Hilton’s cottage, because of me. They asked how I heard of the place and I said I got to know the neighbourhood when I lived at Oxforda. Reade said he had lately been discussing my books with Schiller. I thought him dull and correct, her rather nice.
Now I must go on to post. I long to be with you my Dearest, my Life. 11 o’clock Tuesday.
Your utterly devoted
B
