JEAN NICOD TO BR, 18 APR. 1922
BRACERS 75196. ALS. McMaster
Proofread by K. Blackwell

53 rue Gazan, Paris XIVe
18 Avril 1922

Dear Mr. Russell,

I send you a short article on you in the Revue de Métaphysique. I did not presume to summarise your work, nor did I say quite what I think of your way of philosophy — that it makes the rest look a perfect muddle, and gives one the quiet pleasure of knowing the sort of thing truth is. No one would have taken it from me, as it is not easy to believe. I have tried to show your position as it must appear to the ordinary reader of the Revue, as it appeared to me when I was fresh from the Sorbonne. I have brooded too long over this small article, and have written it in a hurry, fearing that otherwise I should never write it at all. However, as you must see it, here it is.

I have recently been appointed Chargé de Confénces à l’Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, where I explain, once a week only, fortunately, texts bearing on the history of Greek Science. This has come of my interest in the subject years ago. Now, it bores me; and, as my appointment is for 2 years, I hope never to get beyond Plato at all. I am now in the Pythagoreans — queer reading indeed. But it leaves me 6 days a week to get my book on the world finished; which is going to happen, after all.

Joujou is still at the I.L.O. (now in Genoa), as the Sorbonne pays me little, and I don’t know where I shall go next — back to Geneva, perhaps; and her holidays, plus mine, make nearly 8 months.

I should be extremely glad to see you and Dora. I see you are to be this summer at Burg Lavenstein and Varese: might we not go and meet you there?

Joujou and I send our love to you both.

Yours ever
Jean Nicod
