My dear Mr. Kohler,
I am very sorry indeed to hear of Mrs. Holden’s serious accident. I sincerely hope that she will make a good recovery.
With regard to Jackie’s Christmas, I am afraid it would be quite impossible to send her out to Egypt. We cannot spare Peggy in term time, and José is teaching in a school in London, which will be equally unable to spare her; nor do I think it would be very good for Jackie to have the two long and tiring journeys to Upper Egypt and back. Jackie will, I think, be perfectly happy here. She is used to having Christmas with us, and has always seemed to enjoy it.
It is, of course, a disappointment to Peggy, and if by any chance Mrs. Holden were to wish her to look after Jackie during the Easter holidays, it would be a compensation. Jackie is fond of her, so that she is very suitable for the job.
Please give Mrs. Holden my condolences and my very best wishes for her recovery.
Yours very truly,
<signed> Bertrand Russell.
P.S. You might tell Mrs. Holden that Jacky has turned over a new leaf, and has been as good as gold for quite a long time.a
