Dear Professor Perry

Your letter about Mr Norbert Wiener reached me yesterday; I had already heard from his father. I will do all I can to make his time here profitable and pleasant. I find, unfortunately, that he cannot become an “advanced student”, as by the regulations that status is only open to men over 21. But he can become an ordinary undergraduate; and whether he does or not, he can come to my lectures and see as much of me otherwise as he cares to.

As regards rooms: economy is of the utmost importance to me, as my income is very small. At the same time I must have a room to myself, where I can see people not in public. I suppose this would be impossible at the Club? Or would Harvard put a room at my disposal for seeing pupils etc? So long as I have some kind of room to myself, however small, I am satisfied. But I hesitate to take rooms for a year on account of the expense. If you will realize that strict economy is absolutely necessary, but that I could not do my work for Harvard properly without some room to myself, you will be better able to judge what would suit me than I can.

I tried to see Holt, who is in England, but he didn’t think me worth the railway journey required to reach me.

Yours faithfully
Bertrand Russell.
