Dear Gilbert
Thank you for your letter. I am much relieved that you have not more criticisms to make.
I do not myself feel that a subtitle is required. Down to the middle of Chap. V, I deal with historical matters; after that, with issues that are still open. Surely the ordinary reader would expect to find (e.g.) God, freedom, and immorality discussed? And it is difficult to get the right atmosphere for the discussion without some history of previous conflicts. I am concerned not only with “increase of definite knowledge” but also with increase of definite ignorance. Thanks for the point about the Stoics. It only needs a change of a few words, which can be done in the proofs.
Yours ever
B.R.
