My dear Mary

I am very sorry indeed to see that your father2 has died after a very short illness. It must be a great blow to you and all; I see he was staying with Cecilia.3 I always loved his gentleness and his humour, and his charm. Was it quite unexpected? But in any case the sense of loss at the end must be hard. If you see Cecilia please give her my deepest sympathy, which you have also, as you will know without my words.

Yours affectionately
Bertrand Russell.
