Dear Mr. Pearce,
Thank you for your letter of April 24.2 I am sorry to say that I have no recollections of Christine Ladd Franklin that are worth recounting. I never knew C.S. Pierce3 nor have I read any of the criticism of his categories and theory of signs, but I wish you all good fortune in your work on them. It is with regret that I send you so unhelpful a reply to your queries.
In connection with my remark to Christine Ladd Franklin that you cite,4 I call your attention to the fact that though a majority of the American people strongly disapprove and oppose the present American war in Vietnam, the American Government — which has the bullets — not only continues the war but increases its ferocity.
Yours sincerely,
Bertrand Russell

[document] Proofread against a carbon copy, which is an unusual mixture of carbon copy and these ribbon-copy insertions: “copy”, “Plas Penrhyn” and “(signed) Bertrand Russell”. Since there is no signature on this document, the term “(signed)” is omitted from the transcription as it is surely meant to testify, quite acceptably, what was on the ribbon copy of the letter.
