Tuesday
Dearest Alys
Today was a perfect day both for weather and scenery. In the morning we walked to Calatafini but found the Albergo Samuele Butler collapsed, and the only remaining inn unbearable; also the inhabitants were beastly. So we went on to the temple of Segesta, which was unimaginably beautiful; we were there between 3 and 4, and then came on here, picking up Waterfield on the way, and dropping Wright, whose feet were so bad he had to go back to Palermo. My feet are pretty bad but I can just hobble on. Tomorrow we sleep at Partenico, next day at Piana dei Greci. Mayor and I think of making an expedition to Girgenti when the walk is over — there will be just time before I leave Palermo. The orange groves are lovely, and the views most wonderful; but the natives of Calatafini were a revelation of human degradation and bestiality.
Thine aff.
Bertie.
