Dearest Alys

The posts here are erratic too — I got 3 letters from thee this morning, one forwarded from Rome. The latest I got was written Sunday. I am glad Miss Batchelor’s sister has stepped into the breech where Miss B. fails. I wonder why the Suffrage meeting for railway men was a failure. C.A. Strong is a philosopher, a friend of B.B. and Santayana, a son-in-law of Rockefeller, author of “Why the mind has a body” and “Has Mr. Moore refuted idealism?” He is very unhappy, presumably because of his wife’s death. Thanks for the extract about Stanton Coit. I feel no doubt he is innocent. — If thee writes again after this arrives, address here, not Poste Restante. Thee can write up to the 22nd, not after. Perhaps on the 23rd thee could write to La Floridiana, Naples. Better put care of Signor Davis or something of the kind — I don’t know the man’s exact name. — The Vicar of Faringdon seems a fine old boy, one of the good old school. I hope thee is not overworking. — The reason I did not speak to Aunt Maude in Rome is that she was shouting into the women’s W.C. for her travelling companion to come out. I expected to see her again but did not. — Charles reaches us Sunday, but we leave here sooner — probably Saturday. The weather is glorious — as hot and bright as one could wish. Yesterday we went to Monreale, which is beautiful beyond belief; we then went on for a longish walk in the hills. Today we plan going up Pellegrino. The flowers in the country are heavenly. I shan’t be able to arrange to get letters while we are away, the posts here are too untrustworthy. But we shall only be gone 5 or 6 days. — Mayor is very jolly and is pleasant.

Thine aff.
Bertie
