Dearest Alys
I reached here safely after going on to the top of Crooksbury, through Telford and past Pinehurst. It was pleasant seeing the common again.
I am very sorry indeed that thee has been depressed again. There has been no feeling in my mind which ought to have depressed thee, though, as I told thee in Ireland, I can’t help having an aloof manner when my mind is full of work and I am worried by it. My work for some years past has been a good deal harder than it used to be, and will probably continue so till this book is finished; and I have to get absorbed in it if I am to get on with it.
Today I am lunching at Dunrozel, so I am afraid I shan't have a chance to see thee the Dakyns’s.
Thine aff.
Bertie.
