My Darling1 —
I enclose a platform ticket, which I think must have been meant for you. I wonder how things are going with you.
Last night we had the worst gale I have ever known, with torrents of rain. 2 hurdles, the trellicea by the dining-room, and the wire arch over the gate in the hedge, were blown down; some little trees were broken by them; some damp appeared in the nursery over nurse’s bed. (The gale was from the north.) John appears to have slept, at least no one heard him. He told me this morning “John was a tiny bit frightened”, but I think, from the phrase, that nurse had said it to him. The river in the sand has torn its way to the sea, with huge sand-cliffs on either side. Matthew has put up everything that was blown down. He doesn’t have to pump, as the tank is overflowing.
Both children are very well. John continues to expect “tea with mama and daddy”,b and then says “where’s mama?”
All love. Take care of yourself, my Treasure.
