The SAINT PAUL IN SAINT PAUL,
April 23, 1924

My dearest Darling1

I have had your letter of April 9, but have been moving too fast to get anything later. Feakins is very good about getting your letters to me. I enclose a House House for John. All goes well with me. I spoke at Milwaukee again last night, I speak here tonight. I have about $2000 in the bank; as soon as I get back to New York I will send you some money, probably £400. I get back there on May 2. Nearly half of my exile is over. Ugh! It is beastly. But Madison Wis, where I was the night before last, is rather nice. The professors still remember how I made them bathe in the lake 10 years ago. — All you tell me about Tsai and Boxer indemnity and Wei-Hai-Wei very interesting — glad Wells is doing something. If you are writing to Eliot tell him I’m not at all hurt by his remarks — also that his brother was most kind, and I liked him very much. He is a pathetic lonely soul, like all nice people in this country.

Everybody in New York has seen St Joan and is just as keen about it as you are. If you come to meet me in London when I get home, we will go together. — I hope it is not really serious about your father. I shall be glad when I hear about the operation if it went off all right. I hope Kate is gaining again — but I am not worried about her.

Darling I can’t write proper letters — I get so tired and distracted, and merely want the time to be over. I don’t feel there is the slightest point in the work — it is merely a source of money. Americans are heartless brutes, and will grind poor old Europe to powder. I don’t want them in the League of Nations. Goodbye sweetest Treasure — 1000 kisses and all my heart.
