My Darling Love1 —
Here I am, getting on famously. I am staying with Kallen, Miss Brooks’s friend, in a sort of settlement in the slums. It has a semi-College atmosphere, and suits me. He is a very nice man. He says Miss Brooks still admires you just as much in spite of your being married. Yesterday I sat next Dewey at dinner — his daughter has married Brandauer, and they are living in Urga. I have just seen a man from Liveright who says $750 was mailed to me on March 15, so I infer you are not hard up. I have earned £100 my first 2 days, and all goes well. I am very fit, and not feeling the fatigue at all. You will be amused to know that my first public appearance was in Flatbush! I never knew there really was such a place.
Tonight I am talking to the League for Industrial Democracy, to whom I have a message from the I.L.P. After reading my notes, they explained they didn’t want me to say what I thought, but what they thought. Everything here is a religious sect with an orthodoxy. I feel the tour is going to be much easier than I expected; I have no difficulty in feeling what a meeting wants, and supplying it. It is grossly dishonest, but it will equip John and Kate with a good education. — I cabled to you yesterday for your birthday. Today you achieve political maturity! I wonder what Chelsea is deciding. Dearest Darling, I do miss you so dreadfully. I won’t go again without you. I long for news — I hope for a letter tomorrow or Sunday. I mustn’t write more as there is so much to do. Kiss John and Kate for me. Goodbye sweet Treasure.
