My Darling love1 —
I don’t know whether the letter I posted at Halifax will reach you any sooner than this; probably not. Halifax seemed a dismal place, with mist, melting snow, and cold rain. We are to be in N.Y. very early tomorrow morning.
It is a terrible long time without news from you. I wonder how you are and how John and Kate are and what Chelsea is deciding about candidature and what Sybil will do about you. Also whether enough money has come in to keep you comfortable. If not, cable to me and I will cable money to you, as I shall have some in a day or two.
I am very well — the sea has done me lots of good. You would have liked Bridges because he protested against my having my hair cut. I like him exceedingly.
The Yanks and Canadians on the boat are always drunk. It is the most sottish boatload I have ever seen. They are all laying in a store before bleak abstinence descends upon them — poor souls! It would be better for all parties if they were allowed to drink themselves to death.
The Baron and Baroness and their two charming children and the governess in tears got off at Halifax. The solitary boy of four is left. I am trying to see that he is not taken to Ellis Island and murdered. He is a jolly little fellow.
Sweet love I wish this time was over — I do miss you so. I have dreamed about you every single night. It is a dismal worrieda existence without you. I won’t do it again. But it won’t last very long. Goodbye my lovely treasure.
