My dearest Colette
What a dreadful tale of woe,3 and what courage and resource you showed in calling for rescue. You have my heartfelt admiration. I hope the stroke is such as can soon be cured. But you must not again sleep out of reach of help. I hope the hospital is comfortable and doing all it should.
With fondest love,
Your

tale of woe The tale is in Colette’s letter of c.16 December 1964 (BRACERS 98494), written from St. Mary’s Hospital in Bury St. Edmunds. After suffering a stroke, she was trapped in her cottage over the week-end. She managed to write an SOS note and hurl it through her bedroom window into the street below, thus effecting her rescue.
