My dear Bertie

I am sorry Conrad3 saw the letter I wrote you and I regret having written it. We all lost our tempers, and all said things better not said. I hope that, now that there has been time for reflection, all of us will avoid statements calculated to give avoidable pain. So far as I am concerned, that is my intention.

Yours

Omita

(Draft) In BR’s hand. He wanted Colette to copy it and send it to him as her own. BR would then show it to Conrad. The purpose of the letter was to smooth things over among Colette, BR, and Conrad, who had all been pitted against one another by Peter. There are two other versions of the draft letter: document 200880 (BRACERS 19872) (a rough typescript with many additions and comments in Colette’s hand) and document 200884 (BRACERS 19876). The text of all three drafts is similar. The finished version is not extant. However, it was sent. BR’s letter of 9 July 1949 (BRACERS 19875) acknowledges its arrival with “a thousand thanks”.

Omit This word is in Colette’s hand. She underlined “Yours” so presumably that was the word to be omitted.
