My Darling1, 2

I have just heard that I am graciously permitted to go to Newhaven3 but I don’t know yet when the Court Martial is to be. I suppose we shall all go down together. I am thankful I shall have a chance to see C.A.4

I had rather hoped to find a letter from you here5 — I am worried and troubled — feeling tired, and thinking I ought to concentrate my energies more on work — my conscience keeps reproaching me. And I feel I have hurt you and that makes me dreadfully miserable — but if I have I couldn’t help it — There is a great deal to talk about. I feel it is so difficult to explain the troubled states of mind I get into or to make you see why they are necessary. Be patient with me if you can. Moods come and go — they just have to be endured till they pass. My love, my dear one.
