BR TO CONSTANCE MALLESON, [27 JAN. 1917]

My Beloved —

I was very very glad to get your two little letters3 — I do wish I had not got into this utterly hateful mood — it makes me horrid to everyone and most of all to myself — But I don’t know how to get out of it. There is nothing to do but wait — a little sun and warmth would make a difference but that is not to be had.

I hate the world and almost all the people in it — I hate the Labour Congress,4 and the journalists who send men to be slaughtered, and the fathers who feel a smug pride when their sons are killed, and even the pacifists who keep saying human nature is essentially good, in spite of all the daily proofs to the contrary. I hate the planet and the human race — I am ashamed to belong to such a species — And what is the good of me in that mood? I might as well be dead. But I will get myself into a better mood — only it takes time.
