My Dearest

I have been prevented from writing till it was too late for more than a scrawl. North Whitehead, who is in for an exam, has been round to tell me how he had got on and show me his papers. Now it is very nearly time for the post. I gather that whenever you post your letter, I always get them by the first post in the morning. — My lectures are nearly finished, and I am bringing my thoughts round to the popular book — I wonder very much how it will go. — I don’t want my old papers back — I am sure they are not right either in matter or in form. One wants something much more restrained — they were written chiefly as a relief — it is a comfort to write things out in those moods, but it is not a good method of producing things fit for publication.

I feel very much indeed the truth of all you say about the glimpses of a real joy that one gets in this life — that our love gives us — Only I feel so terribly that few people can get or long keep anything so good as that — it seems almost to increase the injustice. It gives one a great sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate.

Now I must post this. Goodnight, Dearest. I cannot tell you how I long for your kiss my Darling.

Your loving B.
