Dear Professor Fraser1

Thank you for your letter of April 12. When it became clear that Whitehead and I, after our long collaboration, had come to differ fundamentally in philosophy, I decided that, on private grounds, I would not publish anything hostile, and on public grounds I could not publish anything laudatory. I therefore concluded that the best thing was to say nothing. I noticed that he, independently, took the same line about me. Perhaps we were mistaken, but friendship has claims.

Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
