Dear Warder,
With regard to the draft contract you sent me, one or two points arise:
- I have already sold the Canadian rights to Allen and Unwin; I wrote to them on the subject, and they told me to refer you to them.
- Under Clause III (a),a most of the book has already been published in magazines. The wording, therefore, must be modified.
- Under III (b), I suppose you don’t mind if one essay appears in a magazine before date of publication, though this is contrary to the letter of the Clause, which says I must publish at least three in any magazine which takes one.
- The last paragraph of VI(a)b is an innovation. It seemed to me I had done enough in foregoing any advance, and I don’t quite see why I should consent to an almost certain reduction to 10% to after two years. But I do not object to VIII.
- The Home Library is publishing a little book by me, and the Nonesuch Press is bringing out a collection of my parents’ papers with a memoir by me. Neither of these, I presume, is a “general work”.
- I sincerely hope you won’t go bankrupt, but in view of the time-limit (90 days) in XII, it should be stipulated that, if you do, I must be informed of the fact, which otherwise I might not know till too late.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell
