My dear Gilbert,
Thank you for your letter. I think Sir James Marchant’s idea is a very good one and I hope he will carry it through successfully. My only hesitation about contributing myself is that I have already written repeatedly on exactly the question that he is propounding and I do not think I could re-word the matter as effectively. What I have to say about it is expressed perhaps best in the last chapter of my Human Society in Ethics and Politics. This chapter is called “Prologue or Epilogue?”. If Sir James Marchant were willing to include something already published, I imagine that Allen and Unwin would raise no objection; but if something written specially for him is essential, I do not think I could contribute.
Yours ever,
B.R.
