My dear Gamel

It seems a long time since I last saw you, and I suppose it will be a long time till I next see you. But if ever it is possible for you, please let me know. I shall be alone in London the last half of January, as Peter and Conrad will be here — she had an operation and is still in hospital, but will be here in a few days.

I find it more and more difficult to shake off the obsession of world disaster. I find the people who know most are the most gloomy. The prospect takes the savour out of everything. While I was writing a big book it served as an anodyne, but now I have nothing to distract me. I wish I could see you rather less seldom. It seems a mockery to wish you a happy New Year; if it were not, I would. Love as always.

Your
B.
