My dear Gamel
Thank you very much for your letter — I am glad you like my book. Your praise and Gerald’s are very encouraging. Yes, I found the map for my new book, and am busy writing it in the intervals between atomic bombing and starving Germans. I think it should be a book of some importance. My History will appear here probably in the early spring. It contains a few changes, e.g. in the sentence “The library of Monte Cassino is one of the most important in Europe” I have altered is to was. This is typical of our times.
I am very sorry you have been ill and I hope you are better. As for me, I am full of beans.
I wish more than I can say that I could see you but I have found it lately quite impossible to get a room in a hotel so that when I go to London I have to go only for the day and come home as soon as my business is finished. We plan to get a pied-à-terre in London, and if we succeed meetings will be easier. Next autumn we are sending Conrad to Dartington; we have sold this house, with possession next July.
I am glad you think I am at the height of my powers. I hope you are right, as there is so much I want to do. In this desperate world every moment of leisure feels like sin, but one can’t work all the time. Goodbye my dear Gamel. I hope the time for seeing you will come before long. Very much love.
Your
B.
