Dear Sir,

Thank you for your letter of February 18th. I greatly admire Joseph Conrad, who is my first son’s godfather. I think that some of his books are likely to survive, for instance Almayer’s Folly, The Nigger of the Narcissus, Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Chance and The Secret Agent, but there are quite a number of his books which I do not think have any great value. I do not know of anything in his books that shows his Polish origin, except his love of England and his use of “shall” when he should say “will”.

Yours truly,
Bertrand Russell.
