Dear Upton Sinclair,

Thank you very much for your play Hell, which I read with the greatest pleasure. It is delightful — so full of gusto. I read it aloud with Miles Malleson (actor and playwright — author of Black ’Ell) and we were discussing all the time whether the I.L.P. could perform it — for members only, to avoid the Censor. The movie part is the difficulty. Have you any ideas about how it could be performed, or do you regard a performance as impossible?

Is it true you have got into trouble with the authorities because they take the same view of the Declaration of Independence as George III took? If so, you have my warmest sympathy and good wishes.

Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
