Dear Sirs
In looking over old letters, I have come upon one from A.R. Waller, dated 11 Feb. 1920, in which he says, à propos of Principia Mathematica, “The Syndics are reserving the balance in favour of Volumes I, II, and III to help pay for the composition of Volume IV”. It is now certain that there never will be a Vol. IV. Whitehead and I each contributed out of our own pockets to the expense of producing Vols. I, II, and III. We retained no right to any return. But perhaps, in view of the above, you might feel disposed to repay our advance to Mrs. Whitehead and me. (I have not consulted her on the matter.)
Yours faithfully
Russell.
