Cher Monsieur,

J’ai reçu à la fin de mai une lettre de Monsieur André Lalande, qui m’annonçait le premier fascicule du vocabulaire philosophique, qui cependant ne m’est jamais parvenu. Je suppose qu’il s’est perdu dans la poste. Si vous pouvez m’envoyer un autre exemplaire, je vous serai très reconnaissant.

Votre intéressante lettre au sujet de Leibniz est restée trop longtemps sans réponse. Mon excuse, c’est que j’ai été excessivement occupé. Ma femme a été longtemps plus^b ou moins malade, et a dû finalement quitter la maison pour se mettre sous les soins médicales.^c A présent, elle va mieux ; mais j’ai passé par un temps plein d’anxiété. Du reste je viens de finir mon livre « On the Principles of Mathematics », auquel je travaille depuis 1897. On a commencé à l’imprimer et il paraîtra probablement en hiver. Il sera d’environ 500 pages.

Connaissez-vous Frege, Grundgesetze der Arithmetik ? C’est un livre très difficile, mais j’ai réussi finalement à le comprendre, et j’y ai trouvé beaucoup de choses dont je me croyais l’inventeur.

Je lis dans le moment Meinong, Ueber Annahmen. Les études de logique m’ont amené indépendamment à considérer les propositions non affirmées ; mais je crois qu’il se trouve là une distinction qui ne touche pas seulement à la psychologie. Cependant il faut avouer que, du point de vue logique, il y a des grandes difficultés dans ce sujet.

Je me suis beaucoup réjoui de la paix en Afrique. Les camps de concentration m’ont dégoûté à un très haut point, et je me trouve moins impérialiste qu’autrefois. Mais les conditions de la paix m’ont paru bonnes par la plupart.

Veuillez présenter mes hommages à Madame Couturat, et croire toujours à mes sentiments cordiaux et bien dévoués.

Dear Sir

At the end of May I received a letter from M. Andre Lalande, who announced the first instalment of a Vocabulaire Philosophique, which, nontheless, never reached me. I suppose it was lost in the post. If you could send me another copy, I would be very grateful. Your interesting letter on Leibniz has been too long without a reply. My excuse is that I’ve been too busy. My wife has been sick for a long time, and finally has had to leave to receive medical care. At present she is getting better; but I have been through a very anxious time. Otherwise, I have just finished by book “On the Principles of Mathematics” which I have been working on since 1897. They have begun printing it and it will probably appear in the winter. It will be about 500 pages. Do you know Frege, Grundgesetze der Arithmetic? It’s a very difficult book, but I have finally succeeded in understanding it, and I found many things in it which I believed I had invented. At the moment I am reading Meinon, Ueber Annahmen. Logical studies have independently brought me to consider unaffirmed propositions; but I believe that one finds a distinction which is not merely psychological. However, it must be admitted that from a logical point of view, there are great difficulties in this subject. I am very happy about the peace in Africa. I have been deeply disgusted by the concentration camps, and I find myself less imperialist than before. But the conditions of the peace seem good for the most part. Please give my regards to Mme.
