BR received Couturat's "souvenir" of Hanover. Why not publish "le tout du tout 'des mss. de Leibniz'", since there always seems to be something important remaining? He seeks permission to publish his original of Congress paper, which he is reading to the Aristotelian Society in January 1901. Success of Congress. BR is considering doing an article for Mind on Peano et al., like Couturat's article for Revue.

Cher Monsieur

Croyez-moi

votre amicalement dévoué
Bertrand Russell.

Dear Sir,

I was happy to receive your souvenir of Hanover, as I was pleased to hear that your stay had been profitable. Why don’t you publish the whole of the Leibniz MSS., since it seems that there still remains something of interest.

I promised to read the original English of the paper I read at the Congress to the Aristotelian Society in January. We usually publish the papers which are read, but I told them that I did not have the right to publish it. Do you know if there would be any objections to the English publication? It is not, moreover, a literal translation. I would like to publish it in England if I could, but I know that I need permission of the editor of the proceedings of the Congress.2

The Congress seemed to me an enormous success. For my part, I learned a great deal, and I met many scholars who interested me; the papers seemed to me to be for the most part of great importance. I heartily congratulate you and your friends from the Revue de métaphysiques, for having organized such a useful and enjoyable conference.

I have taken to studying the works of Peano and his disciples: I am considering writing an article for Mind, similar to the one you wrote for the Revue.3 I very much admire what Peano does for Arithmetic and Pieri4 for projective geometry: the formulaire5 also strikes me a great and beautiful enterprise, that I would like to see perfected.

Please give my regards to Mme Couturat and tell her that we count on seeing you and Mme Couturat in Cambridge during the winter.

With best wishes,
Bertrand Russell

I would like to publish it in England … I need permission of the editor of the proceedings of the Congress. The French editors had no objection and the English version of Russell’s paper was published in Mind (1901).
