My dear Kate
I enclose a letter for you, from which I learn that your mother does not know your address.
Thank you for your interesting long letter of April 30. You say you wrote a paper on “inner form”, and I have wondered ever since what it is. The most interesting thing about the crusades is how they stimulated pogroms, and transferred trading from Jews to Christians. I am sorry for you having to read such a lot of bad novels.
All you say about Amiel interests me very much. It seems to me that he is good for you so long as there is no tie and no domestic relation, but that if you married him you would soon murder him. Therefore, as I don’t wish you electrocuted, I hope you won’t marry him. You must remember that in marriage whatever was annoying before becomes infuriating.
Yes, the cold winter was very trying. There is no lack of food, but when they cut off our fires half the day during the frost it was miserable. However, now all is well. Thank you very much for the pen to Conrad.
What you say about John is depressing. He writes me long sensible letters on public affairs, with hardly any mention of personal things. I gather he has plenty of money, but perhaps that is one of his delusions?
Please let me know more about your finances. You say one can get money from England; does that mean that the income of your trust is available? If you are hard up, I can always get Simon and Schuster to send you money. I have lots now, so there is no reason for you to hesitate.
I am very sorry not to be going to see you this summer. Please take steps in plenty of time to come next summer, and remember it is worth my while to help with the expense, as I hate your absence.
All goes well with us. I have never known Peter so well and equable. I did a broadcast about atom bombs which had enormous success,1 and yesterday evening I broadcast my views on religion2 — the first time the B.B.C. has allowed a freethinker to do so.
I met Mr. Dana when he was young, and knew his Dana grandfather when I was a boy. The latter was likeable.
Much love, dear Kate.
Yrs affy
