Dear Kate —
Thank you for your good letter and the birthday card, which would have reached on my birthday if I had been still in Wales.
First and foremost, I congratulate you and Charlie on his getting a job. I suppose that, once in, he may hope to rise — I hope all will prosper, at home and at work. As for your search for a job, I am very much surprised that the Embassy won’t employ you; I should have thought your being my daughter would outweigh Charlie’s being American. I wonder whether you ought to be naturalized; I think a conflict between England and America is a complete impossibility, as England could not last a week owing to famine. But I should feel exactly the same reluctance as you do.
Don’t bother about lecture engagements for me. I am getting as many as I want. Until they are fixed up I can’t tell when I shall come to Washington but it will probably be about Nov. 17.
I start for Australia on June 19. It is very nice living here — we have a lot of good talk, and I love the children. Don’t believe American propaganda about England. The majority of the population have never been as happy as they are now. I will explain nationalization when I am less busy. Very much love.
