Dear Gilbert,
Thank you very much for your nice letter. Certainly 80 is much less remarkable than 90. When you reach 100 they will no doubt do even more. I think perhaps you hardly realize that in the eyes of many people I am still not quite respectable — e.g. no university in the U.K. has given me any Honorary Degree. Perhaps I may hope to have become respectable by the time I am 90.
I agree with what you say about our devotion to “some cause or other” and I think your definition of it is as good as it can be.
