My dear Gilbert,

Thank you for your letter, but I think you seem to have got rather the wrong impression as to what my views are. I do not at all agree with E.H. Carr, and I still hold the fundamental Liberal beliefs as strongly as ever, though I realise, as I suppose everybody must, that democracy is not likely to succeed at once in countries that have had no practice in it.

I am sorry that my broadcasts gave such a misleading impression. I think when you see the fuller statements that I am making in a forthcoming book you will realise that our points of view are really very closely akin.
