My dear Gilbert,
Thank you for your letter of December 29th, which took a very long time to reach me as it was addressed to Babraham Road, Cambridge, which I left some years ago.
I do not feel argumentative about the points you raise in your letter. That is to say I only disagree with them sometimes. I am sure Christian civilisation is a grand thing. I read a book the other day about the Southborough Case, and I have, of course, an enthusiastic wish to support Franco, that “Gallant Christian gentleman” as Winston called him. I like, too, the censorship of books in Eire and Boston. Seriously — I like all these things better than Stalin, but I find it hard to be very enthusiastic about them.
Yours ever,
B.R.
(Earl Russell)
