Dear Gilbert
It is dreadful that I have left your letter of Oct. 23 so long unanswered, but I have been in the wars again and harassed by endless worrying business, having been suddenly and illegally deprived of the post from which I derived almost all my income.
I don’t quite know what to say about the Emperor of Russia and kindred subjects. In the 1st. ed. it was the Emperor of China; I thought that after 1917 I altered it to the Emperor of Japan. But I hope that too may soon be out of date. The Prime Minister illustration could be dealt with by merely saying “The Prime Minister in 1906” or something to that kind. But I incline to think it best to put simply “This was written in 1912”. I don’t want to change the bibliography. I can’t revise the book to bring its views up to date, both for lack of time, and because I don’t see how to express my present views popularly. Thank you for the kind things you say about the little book. Much love to you, and Mary if she will accept it. — I am held here now only by a law-suit; perhaps I shall be able to come home in 6 months or so. Some people have said I wished to stay here permanently; this has never been the case.
Yours ever
Bertrand Russell.
