Dear Unwin
I think your proposals to Simon and Schuster generous and wise and kind. I concur with gratitude. At the time when I made the contract with them I had just lost my whole income (illegally) at three days’ notice. What mattered to me was an advance. Norton, whom I approached first, offered $500 as a charity to an old friend. Simon and Schuster gave me $2000 at once and another $1000 later. As I had two children at the university and a lease of a house at $1200 a year, this was more important to me than future royalties. I am ashamed of having made a muddle.
Yours gratefully
Bertrand Russell.
