The Plaisance
On the Midway at Jackson Park—Chicago1
3 Jan. 1939

Dear Warder

1000 thanks for the thing (too grand to be called an ash-tray) on which to knock out my pipe. You are quite right, the things provided for cigarette smokers are useless. At home I use the fireplace, but here there isn’t one. The hotel had provided something that would just do, but Conrad, having just made acquaintance with Jack and the Beanstalk, wanted to see if the object would break, like the giant, if it had a violent fall — and it did.

Best New Year wishes to you both.

Yours sincerely
B.R.
