Dear Miss Lincoln

I am sorry to have caused such a lot of bother over Genghis Khan, whose importance does not warrant it.

I leave the decision to Mr. Norton as to whether to insert a note about that worthy. If a note is inserted, will you make sure that the mention of Jenghis Khan in the text is not deleted? In the proofs which I returned, I cut out all mention of him, which would make the footnote silly. The passage comes fairly early in Chap. II.2
